The art of ring stacking

I have long loved the idea of collecting and layering meaningful pieces of jewelry. My first stacking band was purchased as a stand alone piece, to mark an accomplishment I was proud of in my career. At the time…it was a splurge for me, and I felt such pride and honor when I wore this ring. As the years pass and my journey evolves, I continue to add rings to commemorate meaningful milestones – the beginning of a relationship, the end of a relationship, a trip I took that transformed me… and on and on the story (and the stack!) goes…

Like any good art form, there is a technical aspect that supports the emotional side and that is, the actual styling of your stack. I can draw a parallel to the work an interior designer creates. An interior designer may use asymmetry to add movement, flow and visual interest to the space - styling your stack works in a very similar way…

The secret behind a good stack is creating texture through subtle differences between the layered bands. Different metals, different stone shapes or sizes, different setting techniques… Not only does this allow you to intentionally commemorate one individual celebration, but it helps the milestones compliment each other and build off of one another. Sounds kind of like how life works… right? How perfectly meaningful…

Here are a few tips on how to master the art of ring stacking:

• Embody your unique journey by connecting a memory or moment to each ring in your stack. Telling a story through your jewelry is a special and personal way to make your stack your own.

• Vary your ring styles. Consider stacking multiple rings on one finger and keeping the other fingers bare. Or, stack one single ring on three or four of your fingers.

• Mix dainty and chunky bands, rose gold with white or yellow. Play with the stone shapes, the stone colors, and the size of the stones. Infuse different types of settings like pave, prong set, bezel set, etc.

I hope I’ve inspired you to look deeper into the meaning behind the moments each of your rings may mark. I encourage you to stack your favorites for a personalized look that tells your very own story.
