The Art of Selecting Your Wedding & Spacer Bands

This is part 2 of a 3-part series: You’re Engaged! Now What?

Congratulations on taking the next step in your partnership journey! If selecting the perfect wedding band and spacer band to complement your engagement ring is part of your next chapter, you’ve come to the right place. I understand the gravity in these decisions and am here to guide you through the process with some valuable considerations.

In case you missed it, part 1 in the You’re Engaged! Now What? series dived deep into caring for your engagement ring and keeping your diamond(s) shining for the long haul. You can catch up here.

Now, let’s help you find your dream wedding band so you can start building your stack!

Understanding the Difference:
Wedding Bands vs. Spacer Bands

Before diving into the selection process, let's distinguish between wedding bands and spacer bands. While the same ring can function as either a wedding or spacer band, there are some use case factors to consider.

A wedding band is symbolic, representative of eternal love and the commitment exchanged during the marriage ceremony. Alternatively, a spacer, while generally a beautiful addition to a ring stack, primarily serves a practical purpose –  protecting your engagement ring from potentially damaging your wedding band. More on that here.

Beyond the intended purpose of each ring, the rest comes down to your personal preference; what style you’re going for, if you’re looking for a subtle nod to your romantic commitment or if you'd prefer to make a statement. Plus, either (or both) a wedding band and spacer band can be worn as a substitute for your engagement ring when the occasion calls for leaving your main diamond at home.

Finding the Perfect Balance: Wedding Bands

When selecting a wedding band, you’re going to want something that will hold up on its own but also compliment your engagement ring without overpowering it. Here are some considerations:

1.Consider Your Everyday Style

Envision your overall stack aesthetic. Do you want your rings to feel intentionally matchy matchy or purposely mis-matched

If you like the look of a set and want your wedding band to mimic elements of your engagement ring, then you will want to pay attention to the width of your engagement ring and/or the type of setting you have, if you have diamonds set in your band.

If, on the other hand, you want your engagement ring and wedding band to “marry” well together but you don’t want them exactly the same, you may want to infuse texture by varying the size of your wedding band, the shape, the style of setting and/or the shape of diamonds you choose in your wedding band.

And if you want diamonds, you will also want to determine if you want an eternity band or diamonds part way around

2. Find Your Fit

Think about  how you’d like your rings to fit together. Do you prefer the look of a gap between rings or a flush fit? An open, curved, or straight band? Try on different styles and fits to see what feels best once you see it on your hand— the answer might surprise you.

3. Consider the Future of Your Stack

Do you expect to wear your rings together or separately more often? Also consider if you’ll want to expand your stack over time by adding more bands. Looking ahead is a great way to gain perspective when it can be otherwise easy to get lost in the excitement of a style and fit in the right now.

Most importantly, trust your gut instincts, follow your heart, and have fun while exploring your style and the many directions each decision can take you!

Practicality Meets Aesthetic: Spacer Bands

Spacer bands play an important role in preserving the integrity of your diamond. Here are some factors to bear in mind when deciding if a spacer is right for you:

1. Protect Your Diamond

While opting for a wedding band that won’t damage your engagement ring might sound obvious, you wouldn’t believe how often it doesn’t quite pan out that way.

A spacer band acts as a barrier, preventing damage that can otherwise occur when your wedding band and engagement ring rub against each other. Are you drawn to the diamond on diamond look of engagement and wedding ring stacks? If so, a spacer band is the best way to ensure your diamonds are sparkling (and in place) always.

2. Complement the Style of Your Stack

Choose a spacer band that complements the style of your engagement ring while serving its protective purpose. This practical addition can seamlessly blend with your overall aesthetic and provide an ideal substitute when traveling, hanging on the beach, or in other situations where it’s best to tuck the diamonds away.

Bonus: It’s also the easiest, most affordable way to build your dream stack.

Your Journey, Your Rules

Selecting your wedding and spacer bands is not just about choosing pieces of jewelry; it's a chance to be selective with pieces that reflect who you are, and your love story. Whether you opt for a more traditional matching set or mix and match for a more eclectic stack, each ring holds a piece of your unique journey.

As you embark on this adventure, remember that your rings are not just accessories; they are symbols of commitment, love, and the chapters yet to unfold in your life together.
